Hello!

Welcome to information central.  Come here to get the skinny on everything in the GeekQuilter universe!

Today I'm Sad.

Hey all!  Today, I'm heartbroken.  This week has been a 1-2 punch in the gut with the reported suicides of both Kate Spade, designer and entrepreneur and Anthony Bourdain, author, chef, and journalists.  Both of these people I admired very much for their boldness and their unabashed self expression.  Today's news of Anthony Bourdain has me crestfallen.  My husband and I have been fans of his work, especially Parts Unknown for all of it's 11 seasons.  We have watched every episode, sometimes more than once.  The episode on Detroit literally changed my world view.  I have a deep-held respect for Bourdain's unique perspective and his unflinching command of the English language.  The way he put words together, and especially when accompanied by pictures, was nothing short of genius.  I didn't know the man personally, was just a fan of his work, and my thoughts and good vibes, although not nearly enough are going out to his family, both blood and chosen, especially his 11 year old daughter.  I wish there was more that I could do.

Typically I write my blogs first thing in the morning, but my head wasn't in it.  I quilted instead.  When words fail me (rarely, but sometimes), doing something with my hands never does.  This evening, I took a huge step.  I applied for college.  Yes, if you know me, you know I already have a degree.  Almost 20 years ago, I got a BA in Music Education, but with my quilting, I have been craving more training in art and design.  So, I enrolled in an online, undergrad Graphic Design certificate program at a local University.  In the words of Stephen Sondheim in "Into the Woods" I'm "excited and scared."  It has been 20 years since I was in school.  Back then, I was pretty good at it.  But now, well, we will have to see.  I think that it will be really good for me, though to put myself out there a little and to pick up some skills that I'm very excited about.  So, God willing, I will be starting in the fall!

Oh, and there's fabric.  :)  I did buy some, my oldest nephew asked for a new quilt, because he doesn't know where his is...  *shrug* So, I got some fabric to start that soon.  I also finished my Bear Paw top.  It is STUNNING. I can say that without being braggy, because I neither designed nor picked the colors out.  It was a kit from Craftsy.  The picture is without the borders on, which now are, but it doesn't fit on my design wall anymore, so I can't get a good photo right now.  But at least you have that eye-candy. :)  I also quilted a quilt for my Etsy shop today, so the backing and binding were taken out of my stash, too.  Here's how the numbers work out:

Fabric in this week:  7 yards
Fabric out this week:  9.806 Yards
Net Fabric this week:  -2.806 Yards
Net Fabric 2018:  85.366 Yards

I'm chipping away at the totals.  They are going down.  I can't make it down to 0 at 2 yards/week, but I think I might still be able to get there.  I have some great quilts coming up in the near future.  So, stay tuned, have a great weekend, and until next time:
